Cyber Citizen Shockman Zero

Indie publisher Ratalaika Games and developer Shinyuden have released Cyber Citizen Shockman Zero on the 5th of July 2024 on Sony’s consoles PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It is a beat ‘em up platformer that includes two playable characters, Raita and Azuki, with unique skill sets. It features explosive side-scrolling retro gameplay, as the two heroes face dangerous enemies to save humanity once again.

Cyber Citizen Shockman Zero can be played in English or Japanese language, or better said, you can play the original 1997 Japanese version of the game, called Kaizo Choujin Shubibinman Zero, or the brand new 2024 English translation of the Japanese original. You can manually set control bindings, too, which is always more than welcome, and also set cool video options, like scaling, shaders and a CRT filter, for example. There are also cheats available, that will help you casually explore the game more easily – invincibility, and one hit kills can be turned on. You can play through the game in a two-player cooperative mode as well, which I have not tested. When you will defeat your enemies, in a simple yet effective beat ‘em up style, they will drop various items or coins that will fill up your score meter. Oh, and before I forget to mention, there are also save states available, and the ability to rewind, should you do something stupid and want to do it again in a different manner. This makes the game a bit easier, but also more enjoyable, in my opinion. There is not a huge variety of enemies you will encounter, but it is but beating them to smithereens, nonetheless. There are also a few traps present in some of the levels, that will hurt your health, if they hit you, but the villains are not immune to them either, which is a good thing. There are also frequent boss fights in-between the stages, some easier than other, but all of them quite interesting, to say the least.

In Cyber Citizen Shockman Zero you will climb, jump, and avoid projectiles, all while fighting or avoiding the cyber henchmen that are attacking you. As mentioned, at the end of each stage you will have to face a powerful boss, while the stages are spread through different environments, such as construction sites, museums, forests, trains, and, finally, a space ship. I enjoyed the train stage the most, as it was very well done and exciting. By collecting points, you will be able to level up your character and increase their maximum energy stats.

Cyber Citizen Shockman Zero is quite an amusing side-scrolling beat ‘em up game and also the first game that I have played in the series. It can be completed in a single sitting, and is very fun to play. I will make sure to check out the other games in the Shockman series in the future, for sure!
